PASKUDNIK

Soloperformance

Tubi Malcharzik & Team, 2024

in co-production with Schwankhalle Bremen, LOFFT - DAS THEATER Leipzig, NFT and brut Wien

A post-migrant drag persona, Polish-German memory culture, and queer whispers: With PASKUDNIK, Tubi Malcharzik & Team explore a gap in family memory – the word that often left the grandfather’s lips to call his grandchild. In memory, it lingers somewhere between the dinner table, a football match, parasite, and disgust. It resists direct translation. Its meaning remains elusive.

One hundred years after the plebiscite in the border region of Upper Silesia, fifty years after Willy Brandt’s historic kneeling in Warsaw, and after the family’s arrival at the Friedland transit camp in West Germany, the solo performance takes the term PASKUDNIK as a starting point to rewind migration history in reverse. Together with an interdisciplinary team, Malcharzik seeks to weave together the seemingly fragmented aspects of their biography through the lens of non-binarity. Inspired by the name change of Milo Mazurkiewicz, the performance traverses non- binarity through gender and examines how Upper Silesia can be conceived as non- binary in the context of national ideas.
Through immersive soundscapes, narrative tapestries, and poetic imagination, the performance opens a queer, postmigrant space of memory. The audience is invited to sit at the table of an Upper Silesian family gathering and swipe across the surface of a dating app. With a red velvet dress, myths about high cheekbones, and songs by t.A.T.u. and Peter Alexander, the performance touches on questions of gender roles and sexuality, queerness and anti-Slavic racism, as well as Polish- German relations and memory culture.
