Holy Spits / Święta Ślina – Acts Towards Unbinary States

Grupa Mauczka is a collaborative collective which, drawing on Polish-German history, explores Upper Silesia and queerness through performances, audio essays and educational projects. Based on their own family stories, the group understands “Upper Silesia” as a verb and a practice of disidentification that challenges linguistic norms and nationalism. 

As part of Manifesta 16+, Grupa Mauczka gathered artists from the Ruhrgebiet, Polska and beyond, to dive into the queer mess of Upper Silesia and share their hot takes on the art of śląsking. Through short, dirty performances blending drag, performance art and queer nightlife, they ask what this historical border region was, which leftovers still need to be eaten, and what futures lie beyond national borders and the gender binary.
